“Stand on my shoulders and reach, man. Reach”

Mark Schwimmer CH, CI

You may think elite performers are born that way, but in fact their innate natural talent, is rarely, if ever enough to push them all the way to the top of their game.

You know as well, that staying at the top of their game is even more difficult.

You’ve seen celebrities, athletes, and CEO’s make bad decisions in their business and personal lives. Some of their faux pas cost them dearly, both financially and personally.  Some never fully recover, and some end up on the wrong side of the law, or worse.

You see, I’m not talking about one hit wonders, or flash in the pan personalities.  I’m talking about building a sustainable life, with balance and integrity.  A life of growth in all areas, career, health, and great relationships that nurture your spirit.  The life that many people yearn for but never seem to be able to attain.  Those who have successfully navigated the stressful shark infested waters that they sail in over the long term have all had one thing in common.

Great support.

The world’s top performers in every area have the world’s best support teams. To stay at the top of your game it is essential you have the right people on your team.
Building a world-class support team includes your immediate business (admin support, team leaders, etc), your personal life (family and friends) as well as added accountability to ensure you continue to stretch and grow (coach, mentor, financial planner).

For example, it wasn’t until tennis great Andre Agassi was deep into his career that he found the kind of support he needed.  He had stumbled and sputtered, not just fighting off his opponents, he was struggling with internal demons, both physical and mental until he found the right match and fit for himself.   In his book “Open,” Andre describes  his relationship with his mentor/coach Gil Reyes.

Andre Agassi and Mentor Gil Reyes

Gil offered this to Andre….. “I know I can give you structure and a blueprint to achieve what you want……………I’ll lead, never push………but from now on, just know this: It’s on, man. It is on. You know what I’m saying? ……… you can count on me until the last man is standing. Somewhere up there is a star with your name on it. I might not be able to help you find it, but I’ve got pretty strong shoulders, and you can stand on my shoulders while you’re looking for that star. You hear? For as long as you want. Stand on my shoulders and reach, man. Reach.

Gil’s philosophy parallels the relationship I have with my clients.

As mentor/coach I support your hopes and dreams, at the same time teaching you, and building in the skills that create balance and resilience.  I share the knowledge, and extensive skill set accrued over the years as a result of training with the top mentors in the field, through my personal experience in business, and developing human potential.  My clients make manifest their creative vision, and live fully in their story of a life well-lived.

Together, I get you there
After 30 years studying and working with people who want a sustainable, high quality life of success and personal satisfaction, I’ve noticed a number of patterns those who are successful exhibit day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year.

We all have hopes and dreams, and if you could make them happen on your own, you would have fulfilled them already.

Think about it.  What’s stopping you, and how would you be if you had it all, now?

Yes, Juliet. We all can benefit from a team of trusted advisers. The contrast of the quality of life between those who employ qualified advisers, mentors, coaches, and who maintain strong intimate relationships is clear.

Initially resistant because there was a time when I was private about what I didn’t know, or understand; I have found mentoring, and mastermind type groups to be invaluable to moving me along my path. It’s always good to have someone holding the flashlight while you do the heavy lifting.

      Thanks Charles.
And what makes me a “great mentor,” as you generously offer, I have to give credit to my own team of supporters and advisers, which includes my clients, and others who seek me as a trusted adviser.

Any time we enter into a relationship, even one of teacher/student, I recommend to make space to learn from whomever you choose to work with, teach, advise, lead, etc.

      Thanks Charles.

I would like to defer my “greatness” to those I have studied with, as well as those who have studied with me, or sought me as a trusted adviser.

I recommend as a leader, teacher, mentor, to leave space to learn from those with whom you enter into these types of relationships.

    HI, Mark:

Thank you for the well written and inspiring article. The last line of the article makes me think it takes a lot of trust and courage: to be a Mentor and to be Mentored.

After meeting with you, I realize you have the goods.

    Best regards,

Thank you Gurcell. Your observation is accurate. The courage for both Mentor and Mentee, is that of letting go of needing the road to the outcome to be any particular way. Both must trust the process, and appreciate the skill set of the Mentor.
