What Happens in Hypnosis?

What happens in a hypnosis session at New York Awareness Center?

It’s important for you to know how hypnosis works.

If you learned how to use hypnosis, you would learn how to operate your mind. Many people would rather have someone else do it for them, so they visit a hypnotist.

Other people want to be able to do it themselves, so they learn more about hypnotism, so they can.

The hypnotist has the training and expertise to utilize access to what and where  your beliefs, values and responses that produce desirable behaviors and powerful thoughts reside.  Then through the hypnotists use of appropriate communication called suggestions, the client automatically generates these new more desirable and the appropriate behavior.

Understand, this area is always accessible, and that’s how the messages that generate unwanted old programs got in there in the first place. Here’s the good part.  The hypnotist, after finding out “what ‘you,’ the client, want” you are able to update the old stuff by replacing it with the new way of being that “‘you’ the client want.”

Finding out “What ‘you’ the client, want” is important.

If the client doesn’t agree with the suggestions, it won’t work. A competent, ethical hypnotist always makes sure that he is promoting the clients desired outcome, and not imposing his own beliefs and values on the client.  Make sure the hypnotist honors your wishes. A competent, ethical hypnotist will take time to make sure that you are 100% in approval of the work that will be done, before the updating begins.

Here’s what happens.

You will be asked to fill out an intake form, so the hypnotist knows some basic information about you, as well as a few details that he may use to create a customized experience for you.

The hypnotist will spend a good part of your first session finding out what you want, and making sure that you are 100%
OK with the new behavior, and how it will show up.  For example, if you want to be more confident, the hypnotist will take time to make sure he understands what you need to have happen as “evidence” in the world,…not just in his office….that you are exhibiting new found confidence. He will do this conversationally, before starting the work.

The hypnotist may ask you to do some fun, and interesting exercises, so he can find out more about how you respond to different approaches to hypnosis, and trance. Everyone who wishes to have the experience of trance, can have it.

Once the formal hypnosis begins, usually, there will be an experience of profound relaxation.  This is an extra bonus, because most people are a bit overloaded with stress from everyday life, and the initial relaxation really feels good, as you let go of everyday stored muscular, and mental tension.

Many people think hypnosis is like sleep. Let me assure you, it’s not. Most people are highly aware of everything that is being said, everything that is going on in the environment around them. Calling hypnosis “sleep” is a misnomer, as your awareness and focus actually become heightened. You will be asked to follow specific instructions as the hypnotist directs your attention from one thing, to another, to another, until he determines that you are ready to receive the suggestions that are appropriate for you.

You may notice your own thoughts persist, at first. This is quite normal. In a short time, your mind will learn to let go of these  thoughts and your mind will become open to the instructions that are being given by the hypnotist.

You may be instructed to just listen, other times you may be asked to respond while you are deep in trance.  You can expect to see images, or hear sounds just like when you dream, yet you will know you are awake. You may see sounds, and hear colors, feel bouyant or heavy, sometimes both at the same time.  Whatever you experience, it is your experience, designed for you to get what you came for.  No two people have the same experience, and each session will be different in some way from the other. All you need to do is follow the instructions and you are on your way to success.

When the session is complete for that day, the hypnotist will give you instructions to emerge from hypnosis, and you will open your eyes feeling truly wonderful in every way.

Here’s what will have happened:

  • You will experience deep satisfying physical and mental rest
  • Your body and mind literally come into balance as stress and tension are released, every time.
  • You will have been given specific instructions,  even though you may not remember the specific words that were said while you were in trance, to reprogram you to have new appropriate responses in the area of your concern.
  • You will be taught how to access trance, so you can practice at home, or any time you want to experience this new found skill.

The hypnotist will give you additional instructions after you emerge from hypnosis, about things you can expect to happen in the next few hours, or days. You will also be asked to do somethings on your own, to reinforce the experience you received.
